Shadi is a 36-year-old Muslim who came to the country with his five family members. He is the only breadwinner in his family. Shadi holds a university degree in accounting and he worked for a private company in this field. Financially he was struggling to make ends meet and at one point he had to sell all the gold coins belonging to his mother and sisters. He began to think of a business project to provide additional financial income. At this difficult time, he made a life changing decision and agreed with a business partner to establish a decorating business. During the set-up of the company he made a bad judgement and registered the company in his name only, leaving his business partner with no legal obligations. Shadi’s debts soon accumulated and eventually he could not pay the monthly rent on his apartment leading to a case being bought against him. The amount required to be paid is AED 115,360. He has been detained for 8 months and with no end in sight he will face many years in prison.
